Built by Emperor Babur in 1527 to commemorate his victory over Ibrahim Lodhi in the First Battle of Panipat (1526), it is among the earliest Mughal mosques in India. The mosque sits within a garden named Kabuli Bagh after Babur's wife, and a masonry platform (chabutra) was later added by Humayun. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
